#blogbookaday: Wash On!

37822946.jpgSummary:  “Strange things happen around Petronilla Gillis. International crises, for example.

One day when Mrs. Gillis is giving her daughter a bath, Petronilla cries, “Wash on!” “Wash off, dear,” Mrs. Gillis corrects her. But Petronilla’s words seem to have power. The blue of the washcloth has stained the girl’s cheek. And that is only the beginning.
Colours start transferring between every object Petronilla touches. And every person. And every person who touches an object that has been touched. Before long, the entire world is a spreading mess of colours, and only Petronilla can stop it. But will she?

Translated from Barbouillette by Michèle Marineau, Wash On! is a gleeful adventure with an appealingly mischievous heroine. Manon Gauthier’s mixed-media illustrations are both innovative and charming, inviting young readers into a world where the words of a child have the power to change everything.”(Taken from Goodreads)

Review: This story is about a little girl who finds the power of words when she “colors” her family, her house, the neighborhood and the world with what the doctor calls acute coloritis. Petronilla is a little bit mischievous and a little bit naughty as she continues to say “wash on” instead of “wash off.” But, when the family’s beloved dog can’t be found because of all the colors, Petronilla knows what she must do to find her pet… “Wash off!”

Personal Reaction: I’m always fascinated to see children’s books translated from other countries as they are always extremely different from what we see published here in America. Not only are the stories different, but so are the illustrations. I really enjoyed this fun story about a little girl who’s just a little different!

#blogbookaday (1)This is a new idea I’m trying on my blog this year that was inspired by @donalynbooks and @heisereads – to provide a brief review of a picture book every day of 2018. You’ll get a brief summary of the story, a review of the content, illustrations and theme, my personal reaction to the book and all the pertinent publication information! Enjoy!
