#blogbookaday: Cat on the Bus

28869877.jpgSummary:  “This nearly wordless book uses onomatopoeia and striking bold illustrations to tell the story of a homeless cat who meets an Asian grandfather on a bus and finally finds a home.
A cat enters a grocery store in search of food, but the proprietor shoos her away. A bus approaches offering shelter, but the large-handed, scary-faced driver shouts SCRAM! When another bus approaches, the cat runs in with a WHOOSH and meets a grandfatherly gentleman who changes the cat s circumstances forever.”(Taken from Goodreads)

Review: A cold and hungry cat searches town for something to eat and a place to warm up, but sadly she is shooed away from the grocery store, yelled at by the first bus driver, but finds a friend in the second bus driver who lets her on. Next, an older man sits down next to her and gives her his scarf and makes a decision to change her life for the better.

Personal Reaction: As part of a family that has rescued most of their pets since I was child, this sweet, almost-wordless picture book tugged at my heartstrings. I really enjoyed how well the pictures told the story of this cold and hungry cat looking for a warm place to stay and something delicious to eat. The illustrations of the cat reminded me of a maneki-neko or a beckoning cat found in Japanese culture as a sign of fortune and good luck. This is a sweet debut picture book and I’m excited to see more from author/illustrator Aram Kim.

#blogbookaday (1)This is a new idea I’m trying on my blog this year that was inspired by @donalynbooks and @heisereads – to provide a brief review of a picture book every day of 2018. You’ll get a brief summary of the story, a review of the content, illustrations and theme, my personal reaction to the book and all the pertinent publication information! Enjoy!
