#blogbookaday: I Am the Boss of This Chair

35939898.jpgSummary:  ““I, Oswald Minklehoff Honey Bunny III, am the boss of this chair. You may look at it, and you may walk by it, but you may not sit in it.
Because I am the boss of this chair, and that’s that.”
Oswald Minklehoff Honey Bunny III has always been top cat. Then Pom Pom the kitten comes along and suddenly Oswald isn’t the boss of everything anymore—not the toilet paper, food dish, back door, toy mouse, or even his own special chair. Will Oswald realize that life is more fun when you have a friend—and that, really, there’s plenty of room on the chair to share? A fun picture book with a comforting message for any kid with a new sibling.” (Taken from Goodreads)
Review: Oswald likes being in charge of the household, but finds it much more difficult when a new kitten shows up. And when the kitten sleeps in Oswald’s chair and plays with his mouse, Oswald has had enough! This sweet story about accepting a new sibling into the family is a great read aloud for cats and kids alike! The illustrations are filled with bright, bold colors and onomatopoeia words that give the story more depth as the cats chase each other around the house.
Personal Reaction: From the perspective of an only-cat this story about change in a family dynamic is sure to be a hit with kids as a new sibling enters the household. I love that it pointed out Oswald’s feelings of not being too sure of this new kitten, to being really upset and finally learning what fun it can be to share (but still have a few of your own things as well). Kids will definitely relate to all of of Oswald’s feelings and the story is a great way to start a conversation with a preschooler about how a new sibling will change the family, but also make it better.

#blogbookaday (1)This is a new idea I’m trying on my blog this year that was inspired by @donalynbooks and @heisereads – to provide a brief review of a picture book every day of 2018. You’ll get a brief summary of the story, a review of the content, illustrations and theme, my personal reaction to the book and all the pertinent publication information! Enjoy!
