Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Audiobooks for Kids

I grew up traveling around the United States and have vivid memories of listening to audiobooks in the car – what else were my parents supposed to do with four kids in the car for 10+ hour road trips?  My parents also really loved The Phantom of the Opera and I remember falling asleep awaking up to the soundtrack more times than I can actually remember. Audiobooks were a way to keep all four of us entertained for at least a little while.
I love when parents ask for audiobooks for their little ones – it’s a great way for the whole family to share in the experience.  It can also help struggling readers follow the text as the book is read aloud to learn the rhythm of reading – where to pause, how the words are pronounced, etc.

The list below includes some curated items from a variety of places – some I have listened to, others are now on my list.  I chose a number of books read by the author – sometimes this works amazingly well, other times not so much.  Sometimes celebrities do a really great job – again, other times, not so much.  To find some great audiobooks for your family, check out the Odyssey Award presented to the best audiobook produced for children and/or young adults and definitely take a look at the Notable Children’s Recordings for an even more extensive list of audiobooks for children 14 years of age and younger!  Enjoy!
