It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? 8/1/16
Eventually (I hope), my life will slow down just a little and I’ll be able to read more. I don’t see that happening any time soon, but one can hope. I didn’t get a lot of reading time this week as I had something happening after work every night this week. But, I did spend the weekend at the beach with a bunch of friends and finally got some young adult books read that have been on my TBR for quite a while.
I loved both of them – Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli and The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B by Teresa Toten. Both are young adult realistic fiction novels. Simon is about a gay teen who’s being blackmailed into protecting his sexual identity as well as the privacy of a friend he’s been emailing. It’s a very real love story about a gay teen who’s trying to manage family, friends, a bully, and more.
The Unlikely Hero is a Schneider Family Book Award winner and is the story of Adam whose managing divorced parents, a younger, half-brother and his obsessive-compulsive disorder which makes everything that much more difficult. Young adult authors are not afraid to shy away from some really serious issues but are also able to do it in a way that usually involves deep characters you learn to love, a twist of humor and in the end, you emerge from the novel a different person than when you started and I think that is absolutely amazing!
I haven’t quite figured out what I’m going to read this week, but I’ve definitely got a few things I’d like to get through!
