Audiobooks at the Gym
Penguin Random House Audio is advertising in an ingenious place, if you ask me. This postcard was in a rack outside the women’s locker room and they’ve had ads running on the gym’s television channel for at least a few weeks now. That’s a captive audience and one that can easily use something different to listen to as they workout! I don’t often listen to audiobooks at the gym, but I did get my boyfriend’s mom to start using Playaways, individual machines loaded with an audiobook – all you need are a pair of headphones! I do listen to podcasts at the gym a lot, my commute is under 5 minutes to work, so the gym is where I spend a lot of my time catching up on the podcasts I follow.
What do you listen to at the gym?

Yes, genius! I love listening to audiobooks if I’m working out alone. I usually do classes at the gym though. Audiobooks are perfect for walks or runs. I was just trying to convince my niece (age 14) to give them a try.

There’s a great list that one of my friend’s was on the Committee for called the ALA Notable Children’s Recordings (which includes up to age 14) and the Odyssey Award for Excellence in Audiobook Production includes children’s and YA literature!

I work out at home (and walk). Listening to audiobooks is a key factor in keeping me motivated. I agree that this is smart marketing on Random House’s part.

I would love to listen to audiobooks while walking my pup, but she’s too much of a handful to get distracted!
