This week’s Top Ten Tuesday was a Halloween freebie and since I focus so often on middle grade novels (which I love), I thought I’d focus on ten Halloween picture books that I personally enjoy. It might have also been decided in this way because I don’t like scary books… This book is based on an old African American spiritual and also has informational aspects as well. Definitely a fun read for everyone who likes skeletons at Halloween! You can’t go wrong with Doreen Cronin, I love just about everything she has written,and especially the Click, Clack series. A book about friendship, sharing and soup with the bonus of a pumpkin soup recipe in the back! This book, written by the author of The Gruffalo, is a rhyming story about a witch who gives a couple animals a ride on her broom, but when disaster strikes, what will they do? Don’t worry the illustrations are adorable and not at all scary! This is on the list (and I know it’s old!), but I can remember reading this one when I was little, so it’s on the list because it holds such strong memories for me. And, I didn’t say this was the best of the best, just books that I enjoy! I love the artwork in this book with such stark contrast between the orange and black. Kazuno Kohara also wrote The Midnight Library with illustrations in yellow, blue and black. Her artistic style is so unique… and I love it. This is a fun read aloud about a little witch girl and a human girl on Halloween night. And it’s not too scary to read to even the littlest of listeners! I love when bilingual books flow so smoothly you don’t have to worry about stumbling and I think this book does just that. Plus, with illustrations similar to that of Day of the Dead celebrations, this book might be of interest to Hispanic (specifically Mexican) families. This book is so funny and the kids think it’s hysterical. Duck gets stuck in a pumpkin and while trying to get help from his friends – scares them all! I have a new appreciation for this book. I just bought a copy in board book form and sent to my brand-new nephew, with a Baby’s First Halloween card (which I didn’t even know existed!). I can’t wait until I get the chance to read it to him!
