Happy (Belated) International Literacy Day!

I’m a little behind in the times, I just got back to work from my vacation, so I’m catching up with the news and found this great literacy infographic from Grammarly.  Literacy is still a global issue that must be addressed – not only in developing countries, but even in our own backyard.  32 million Americans are illiterate and the number is probably much higher when you look at functional illiteracy.  The statistics below are cited from UNESCO, the U.S. Department of Education and the National Institute of Literacy making them not gross exaggerations, but facts.  I was actually shocked by the high number of literate adults in the world, but when you look at the numbers, 115 million people ages 15 – 24 are illiterate, 2 out 3 of those are women.  Which brings me to the larger issue of gender equality worldwide.  Literacy opens up a world of possibilities – opportunities for business, being financially responsible for your family and more.  Take a look and see if anything surprises you!
