Top Ten Tuesday: Books That Would Be On Your Syllabus If You Taught EASY READERS 101

So rather than specific titles, I’m going to go ahead and focus on authors, many of who mainly focus on easy readers, but a few who are a little more widespread.  I chose to go with Easy Readers because its a section of our library (and many others, I suspect) that gets a lot of use, year around.  So many parents want to help their children learn to read.  So here are my top ten authors that I would suggest (for varying reading levels):

  1. Tedd Arnold – If you’ve never read the Fly Guy series, you’re in for a treat!  A great series for boys who may be a little choosy in their book selection.
  2. Kate DiCamillo – A rather well-known author of chapter books, but check out Bink & Gollie and the Mercy Watson series for more accessible short chapter books for beginner readers.
  3. Grace Lin – An author who has written everything from picture books to chapter books, her easy reader series, Ling and Ting about Chinese-American twins who are the same, but different.
  4. Arnold Lobel – A classic author of the easy reader format, I know I grew up reading the Frog and Toad series.
  5. 220596Antoinette Portis – An author whose books will most likely show up on the picture book shelf, her stories are simple to read and are filled with imagination.
  6. Cynthia Rylant – Another classic on my list who has continued to write books for many, many years.  Rylant is well-know for her Henry and Mudge series and her more recent series, Mr. Putter & Tabby.
  7. Laura Vaccaro Seeger – Seeger’s books will be found both in the picture book and easy reader section and are great for beginner readers!
  8. Dr. Seuss – An author who needs no introduction and one of the most popular easy reader authors!
  9. Jean Van Leeuwen – The Amanda Pig & Oliver Pig series are about a sister and brother pig as they deal with school, family and friends!
  10. Mo Willems – One of my favorite read aloud authors, Mo Willems has one a number of Theodor Seuss Geisel Awards for his series Elephant & Piggie.  The Geisel Award is given annually to authors and illustrators for the most distinguished book for beginner readers.
