Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Of Your Auto-buy Authors

As a librarian, I have very strict rules about books that I purchase for my own library.  If I bought every book I wanted, my house would soon be overrun with books!  So, I always have to read a book before deeming it worthy of being added to my personal library.  But these authors are ones that I will read anything they publish.  I had a number of other authors that I was thinking about adding to my list, but they have only published a few books, so I went with more prolific authors for the most part.

  1. 222458Blue Balliett – one my my favorite mysteries, Chasing Vermeer, and the first book discussion I ever led as a library aide.
  2. Joan Bauer – my favorite story has to be Hope Was Here.
  3. Sharon Creech – I have loved Sharon Creech’s stories for many years so much so that I don’t think I can pick a favorite!
  4. Christopher Paul Curtis – Christopher Paul Curtis is a powerful author of historical fiction and someone who I can never pass up!
  5. Sarah Dessen – love Sarah Dessen’s realistic fiction for teens, my favorite by far is The Truth About Forever
  6. Kate DiCamillo – Kate DiCamillo has such a talent to go from entertaining easy chapter books like Mercy Watson to a classical, fairy-tale style of The Tale of Desperaux – always amazing.
  7. Lisa Graff – Powerful stories of friendship, family and coming-of-age.
  8. Cynthia Lord – I absolutely loved Rules and will read anything Cynthia Lord writes!
  9. Pam Muñoz Ryan – I really enjoy Pam Muñoz Ryan’s books, especially her most recent, Echo.
  10. Brian Selznick – One of my favorite authors of a new format of writing children’s books that he continues to change and adapt, but I must say my favorite still has to be The Invention of Hugo Cabret.

Walter Dean Myers (depending on the book), Gary Schmidt, and Louis Sachar are just a few off the top of my head. Joan Bauer is one of my favorites, but I can’t seem to get any of my students interested in her. 🙁

I love Walter Dean Myers, he’s such a strong writer and I just got the chance to hear Gary Schmidt speak at a conference and just finished an ARC of Fuzzy Mud by Louis Sachar. And isn’t it funny how we can love a book so much and kids are not interested at all? Have you read Because of Mr. Terupt? I had a tween suggest it to me and it was amazing!
