New Activities for the Early Literacy Crowd

storyWe’ve started planning for our fall programming and I’m looking into new ideas to share with our early literacy crowd (birth – 5 years old).  We have a variety of storytimes we offer:

  • Infant
  • Toddler
  • Preschool
  • Famiy
  • Yoga
  • Parachute
  • Pajama
  • Sensory-Friendly

We’ve also begun offering our Preschool Explorers program which is a STEM-focused, hands-on program for preschoolers.  We are also a Family Place Library which means at least twice a year we offer Parent-Child workshops for families to attend, but for the fall I wanted to try and find some new, fun ideas for parents and kids to participate in.
So, for the fall we’ll be offering a Petite Picasso class for ages 2 – 5 with art exploration and sensory materials for children and their parent/caregivers to explore.
We’re also going to try a Baby Yoga class for 0-24 months and their parents/caregivers.  I’ve started looking at some material, but I’m waiting a little while before I plan this program because I’m going to need to provide poses that adjust for each child’s age and abilities.
I’m also really excited about offering an E-Tots program with our iPads allowing families to explore educational and fun apps that are appropriate for toddlers and preschoolers to use with their parents/caregivers.  This is a brochure we created  a few years ago to hand out to parents, but I’m hoping to update it and focus on a few apps that families can experience in the library.
I am so lucky being in a library where I have the support from my supervisor as well as the staffing that allows me to experiment with new programs and get feedback as to what our patrons are looking for.  What type of programs do you offer to your Early Literacy crowd?  Anything that has worked so well that I need to try it out?

I haven’t created it yet, but I’m hoping to borrow some ideas from other librarians and I’ll definitely post the list when I create it! I’ll edit this post and add a brochure we created a couple years ago… I’d double check that some of these are still available but we compiled this list from a number of sources online.
