Edible Book Contest
This is such a great event to encourage getting children into the kitchen! We’ve had an annual Edible Book Contest for the past six years and although we don’t get many submissions (usually between 10 – 15) the kids that do submit edible books are amazingly creative and their submissions are so interesting to see. This year we had three different participants submit The Lorax and each looks very different and we also had two submissions for the story Snowmen at Night, again both are unique!
We keep our contest fairly simple:
1.) Choose a children’s book you want to create.
2.) Make something edible that somehow relates to the story.
3.) Drop it off at the library on a pre-determined day with the title of the book, your name, and the ingredients you used.
The kids get simple trophies (we get ours from Oriental Trading) and a certificate! We also choose a first, second, third and sometime an honorable mention award. Most often kids choose to decorate cakes or cupcakes, but every once in a while they think outside the box using fruit, or other edible things. We actually use our creations as refreshments for our big end-of-the-summer party for the summer reading program. Thankfully, we haven’t had any issues with allergies and I think most people are super careful if their kids do have allergies.

How cool is this?! Do you have photos of the entries? I would love to see them.
