Book Review: "The Swift Boys & Me"
I picked this book up thinking it would be a middle grade novel where everything gets wrapped up very neatly by the end of the story, but I was pleasantly surprised with the ending of this book although there was closure, it was not how I expected it to end. Nola’s best friends live next door, which is a perfect arrangement. The three Swift boys and Nola plan on working odd jobs around the neighborhood this summer to pay for tickets to see the circus that is coming to town in August and Nola can’t wait. But, everything changes when the Swift’s dad leaves without saying good-bye. The boys, who were once more like brothers to Nola become distant and quiet and Nola isn’t too sure what to do, especially when she needs her friends more than ever.
I was a little worried this story would be too focused on addressing so many issues, but it seemed to work really well. Don’t get me wrong, this book covered a lot of issues! The characters were realistic and as I said the ending surprised me. Without giving it away, Nola learns that sometimes growing up means things change and can’t go back to the way they were. Some changes happen within her family and some she chooses to make herself which I think is what makes this book a very strong read for middle grade kids who may be having a little difficulty with friends they’ve grown up with.
This is a coming-of-age story of family, friendship, and learning that changes may happen, but it’s sometimes for the best. Learn more about the author by checking out her website!
