Book Review: The Fourteenth Goldfish – Literacious
I was so excited to get my hands on a copy of this uncorrected proof while at ALA in Las Vegas this year. The Fourteenth Goldfish will not be on sale until August 26, 2014, which means this review is based solely on the advanced read’s copy (ARC) and information may have changed with the final printing. Ellie is in sixth-grade, but wishes for nothing more that for things to go back to the way they were in 5th grade, when she still had a best friend, and her goldfish. Then one day, a very familiar looking boy shows up at her house. Not only does he dress a little weirdly, but he also looks a lot like Ellie’s grandfather. Is this awkward teenager really her Grandma Melvin? He is a scientist who has always been fascinated with living forever. What if he’s finally figured out a way to do it? Although it’s a quick ready, The Fourteenth Goldfish would make a great book for discussion. With issues dealing with family, friends, life, death, and immortality, Ellie’s world is one that kids can relate to in some ways and give a lot of thought to in other ways. I also really liked how Holm threw in some great facts about famous scientists throughout time who kept trying no matter what happened, who always believed it was possible. Of course, you can’t cover all these topics and not throw in a few laughs, and that’s just what Holm has done. A great read for girls who love science and for kids who like asking questions.
