Princess Posey and the First Grade Parade
I’ve finally begun working on my New Year’s resolution to find more books for beginning chapter book readers (i.e. early elementary school). Princess Posey definitely fits the bill – in length of chapters and the book in its entirety, in vocabulary, and in content. The first in the series is Princess Posey and the First Grade Parade by Stephanie Greene. In this story, Posey is going to be starting first grade and is very nervous about being dropped off by herself, about the long blue hallway she has to walk down and most of all about leaving her well-loved pink tutu at home. Not only that, but she’s got a baby brother at home who seems to be taking up all of mom’s attention. When Grandpa and Posey stop for ice cream as a special treat, Posey sees her new first grade teacher and after talking they figure out a way to make everyone a little more comfortable their first day of school.
With accessible chapters and illustrations that break up the text into manageable sections, this is the perfect chapter book to transition readers from easy readers to longer books. Posey is an adorable character with a truly 6-year-old voice and I wouldn’t hesitate to suggest this story to readers looking for that next great book. Plus, this is a series which will make it that much easier to transition from easy readers to chapter books. I think this is a series that I’ll definitely use as a suggestion this summer when everyone needs a new book to read!
