Yoga Story Time, Daisy Troop Visit, & Play Practice

… or just another day as a children’s librarian!  This is the type of day that makes me absolutely LOVE what I do for a living.  I began my afternoon (late shift) with a 45-minute yoga story time.  We used the same “sock” theme as yesterday, but incorporated some yoga in between our stories and the room was packed (22 kids and parents)!  The kids were having a great time practicing poses, giggling when they couldn’t un-pretzel themselves from our pretzel pose and having a really great time.  I think my favorite part is when I tell parents that during a closing quiet time the room will actually be quiet for 2-3 minutes.  Skeptical looks came my way, but with quiet music, lights turned down, and Beanie Baby animal friends the kids were quiet for 3 minutes (and it’s our first story time this session!)  And when I say quiet, I mean, quiet… I barely heard a peep from 22 kids ranging from 2 – 5 years old.

After story time, I had to get ready for a Daisy Troop visit – 14 little girls ranging from 5 – 6 years old came for a quick story time and a behind the scenes tour of the library.  It’s amazing how much kids respond when you get excited and so that’s what I did – I got excited!  Which honestly, isn’t too hard for me because I love what I do!  We talked about the library, read a story (Miss Smith’s Incredible Storybook by Michael Garland) and then did our tour.  Even some of the parents learned a thing or two about the library.

And then, not 10 minutes later we had our spring play practice.  9 out of 12 kids showed up for practice which is really great when the other three are part of one family.  The middle schoolers are putting on three short plays at the end of the month and they make me laugh so hard.  We chose Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs by Mo Willems, The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt, and Limelight Larry by, Leigh Hodgkinson.  Yes, each of theses stories in and of themselves are so funny – but the kids are really getting into their characters now with new voices, facial expressions, and caricatures.  I laughed for almost an hour as a I tried to best wrangle all of their creative energy into something we could work with – and I think we’ll be great the night of the performance!

I loved each of these programs and I’m so glad that I work in a library where we offer so much to the community, it’s been a long day, but a good one.  Good night!
