Story Time Theme: Socks

my_green_kiteOur next story time session has begun and with it, a new schedule which  means I’m doing back-to-back toddler story times on Tuesday morning.  Because it’s the first day of the month I also had to run statistics reports this morning, so needless to say, I’ve been very busy!  The kids (and adults) did a great job in story time this morning – responding well to the books, but especially to the new song, Feet by Pete Himmelman.  It definitely has a great rhythm – perfect for marching, jumping and moving around in general.  My yoga story time begins tomorrow, so we’ll see how that goes and with an older audience (3 – 5), I’m choosing a few different books to generate more interest with them.

Opening

  • Traditional: Put Your Hands Up In the Air & Open Shut Them
  • Yoga: Warm-up (Rock n Roll, Zip up Spine, Deep Breaths, Cat/Cow, pounce from child pose (lunge forward, Dog)

Puppet: Meet Woolly (monkey) and give high fives!

Early Literacy Tip/Story Stretcher: Encourage play at home by mixing up a bunch of socks for your little one to sort or practice making patterns with different socks in a row.

ASL Sign: Socks (pointing both of your index fingers down. Rub the fingers together a few times.)

Book One

  • Traditional: Duck Sock Hop by, Jane Kohuth
  • Yoga: Sally and the Purple Socks by, Lisze Bechtold

Transition

  • Traditional (fine motor skills): 5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed
  • Yoga Sun Salutations (Mountain, Reach Up, Touch the Ground, Hands at Knees (flat back), Plank Pose, Downward Facing Dog, Walk Toward Hands, Repeat 3x)

Book Two

  • Traditional: Have You Seen My New Blue Socks? by, Eve Bunting
  • Yoga: A Pair of Socks by, Stuart J. Murphy

Transition (changes weekly)

  • Traditional (gross motor skills): “Feet” (My Green Kite by, Peter Himmelman)
  • Yoga Focus: Core Strengthening (Cobra (hover hands), Shark, Danda, Pretzel, Boat)

Book Three

  • Traditional: New Socks by, Bob Shea
  • Yoga: Duck Sock Hop by, Jane Kohuth

Closing

  • Traditional: Shake Your Sillies Out Puppet Show
  • Yoga: Cool-down (Bridge, Happy Baby Pose, Star Pose/Deep Breaths)
