Multicultural Fair
Tonight the library’s hosting a multicultural fair that incorporates and celebrates the diverse community we are a part of. We outreached to a number of library staff members and community members to help by providing information about the heritage and culture at a table where they can include dress/costumes, food, activities, and dance. We have people helping us from 12 different countries around the world, the high school cultural and heritage club, as well as the library’s Junior Friends providing the United States table (which includes “all-American” food). Also, throughout the evening, the National Anthem will be sung, a Bollywood dance program, an Indian classical music and dance, a children’s group dance from Mexico, a dance performance from Ireland, and a classical Chinese dance performance.
We’ve done a similar program during the Summer Reading Program when the theme was One World, Many Stories and I think it’s a great way to bring our diverse community together to celebrate how everyone is different and similar at the same time. I think an event like this can be done at any level – with kids or adults, or combining everyone into a big family event.
