Summer Reading Workshop

20140220-122930.jpgI’m spending the day at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia to learn how science and literacy can work together to create an amazing summer reading program.

We’ve spent the morning doing some great experiments with balance and sound and all the ideas they have given us have included very basic supplies that are inexpensive and easy to access.

“Maker spaces” are hugely popular right now and it doesn’t require 3D printers and thousands of dollars to create and make…. experimenting with science and allowing children to learn using a focus on inquiry and open-endedness. The focus is exploration and understanding by experimenting, creating, and designing. It’s only lunch time and I’m already excited about so many of these ideas and am excited by some new ideas that can help me plan for some upcoming programs that are sure to be very popular!
