“Smitten” With Books

smitten about books

Yesterday I was finally able to put up a new bulletin board at the library.  I don’t get to do bulletin boards very often, so when I do, it usually takes me awhile because I’m a perfectionist.  For the next few months of winter our bulletin board theme is “We’re Smitten With Books.”  I can’t take all the credit for this one, I think I found the idea in either Library Sparks or something similar.

As you can see from the image, our bulletin board is covered in dark blue paper, with a little bit of white “snow” at the bottom.  I added our slogan across the middle and then put up a clothesline to hang our mittens.  I allowed our middle school kids to decorate mittens with a title and author of a book for kids.  I clipped the mittens on with clothespins and added some snowflakes to complete the look.  I liked this bulletin board because it’s very three-dimensional.  The mittens aren’t stapled or glued to the board and even the snowflakes are only glued to the backdrop on the top corner making them look as though they are floating.  This was a really easy bulletin board to put up and you could even incorporate an open craft time with it – by allowing children to create their own book mittens.  Then you could circulate different mittens on the bulletin board for a few months.  I thought it turned out really well and I really happy that my slogan is centered and straight!
