Nelson Mandela

Kadir Nelson’s beautiful picture books are an amazing way to understand the history of such an amazing man as Nelson Mandela.  Mandela was born in 1918 and was named Rolihlahla which translates to “troublemaker.”  Boy, did he get into trouble.  Mandela fought for years against apartheid, was later imprisoned for almost 30 years, and the became South Africa’s first black president.  His legacy will live on for many, many years to come.

Kadir Nelson’s biography is very brief, yet very powerful with beautiful paintings and enough information for elementary school children to understand the life and times of Nelson Mandela.  Although this is only one of many biographies (and autobiographies) about Nelson Mandela, I believe this is an extremely strong biography – accessible to young children and adults alike.
