Library Website Usability
So, because I have so much extra time on my hands (not!) and our library website is sorely in need of an update, I’ve decided over the next month or two to start renovating! In all actuality, the library tends to be a little quieter during the holiday season, so I’m hoping to use this time to get A LOT done! Library websites should (in theory) be amazing resources for community members; a place to access information about the physical building and also as a way to reach out into the community it new and exciting ways. Often they can become a black hole filled with information, but difficult to navigate and out of date.
Let me start at the beginning, my skills in web design are basic – I know basic HTML, but have no clue when it comes to CSS and PHP. I do have quite a lot of knowledge about website usability and design as part of my graduate assistantship was focused in this area. Our library’s website was a stand-alone site about 4 years ago and then the township decided to create an overarching website that included the library as well as the park & rec department. I think it makes sense to create a cohesive website for the services provided by the township, but the restrictions when it comes to design can be frustrating at times.
I am working with co-workers to ensure that the information available on the website is up-to-date, accurate, and makes sense. Not only does it take a lot of time just to edit content, but our goal is also to redesign (as much as possible) the actual navigation of our website. Currently, I’ll admit, there are parts of the website that I don’t even understand, letting me believe that our patrons are even more confused. Our hope is to create a more focused design that is easier to navigate. I am now in the throws of trying to figure out where things belong, fact-checking information with co-workers and it’s going to take a while, but I’m convinced this service should be as customer-focused as our service within the physical library as well. Wish me luck!
