The True Blue Scouts of Sugar Man Swamp – Literacious
If you love classic storytelling and tall tales about creatures that such as The Abominable Snowman, the Yeti, and the Loch Ness Monster, then The True Blue Scouts of Sugar Man Swamp is the book for you. Kathi Applet uses a narrator that feels just like he’s talking to the reader to share the story of the Sugar Man Swamp scouts, a 12-year old boy named Chap, an alligator wrestler, 13 wild hogs on their way to the swamp to steal sugar cane, and a Yeti-like creature named the Sugar Man. I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel with this story – chapter books with talking animals can walk a fine line of being “too babyish” but Applet weaves a story filled with adventure, mystery, and just enough magical elements to be intriguing. The chapters are extremely short, creating an easy read for older elementary school children and young middle schoolers to enjoy – especially those who love stories and animals. Take a look at Kathi Appelt’s website for more books that she’s written.
