The Dark

The-DarkI picked up The Dark by Lemony Snicket with trepidation.  Lemony Snicket write unique and interesting children’s books and I was unsure of what avenue he would take with a book about being scared of the dark.  As I began reading it, I started to get a little freaked out, the dark was a scary place, but soon my fear was replaced with understanding and happiness as the little boy in the story, Laszlo, overcomes his own fear of the dark to understand that it will always be a part of his house, but there is not need to fear it.

Jon Klassen illustrated this suspenseful tale of overcoming a childhood fear in a way that both parents and children will understand.  By creating a beam of light from a flashlight, Klassen has brightened the world of Snicket’s dark story!

This is wonderful story helping children overcome an age-old fear of the dark, definitely take a look and if you’re brave enough – curl up with this book and a flashing!

And if you like this, try Lemony Snicket’s ‘The Composer is Dead’ too! It’s a hilarious investigation of the orchestra to find out who is responsible for the composer’s demise – and includes a CD of the author narrating it himself!
