Spring Fever
The last couple days have been in the mid-80s with a great deal of humidity reminding me that summer is just around the corner and if that’s not all we’ve been visiting all the schools in our district getting the kids excited about summer reading this year and spring fever is running rampant!
Each year we visit the schools during the month of May to talk up the library’s summer reading program for the year. We give the kids a brief synopsis of what is involved, a few highlights for the programs that we’ll be offering, and we play a fun trivia game that keeps the kids engaged and having fun! The trivia game is fairly easy to construct and we have found it to be one of the best ways to keep kids interested during a 1/2 hour presentation. We change the game each year based on the Summer Reading theme, so for this year we focused mostly on underground trivia. We selected pictures of book jackets, animals, plants, people doing jobs, etc. that have a primary focus of being underground. We then bring up a few members of the audience to compete in the trivia game. In between their questions, we also add questions for the audience as well (this keeps them engaged too!) The best way to do this we have found is to provide the kids with a true/false question and ask the audience to stand up if they believe the question is true and stay seated if they believe the question is false. I always try to find some really interesting trivia for the kids to learn while we’re at it.
Wish me luck as we go out to our next school this afternoon – I’ll need it! It’s a Friday afternoon before a long weekend – the kids (and I) will be quite antsy! (no summer reading pun intended!)
