Summer Countdown….
Now, for most people summertime means vacation, sun, surf, relaxation, being outside, and spending time with family and friends. For public librarians, summer is its own monster filled with busy programs, families coming into the library endlessly asking for their summer reading books for school assignments, and more work hours than I care to think about, but it’s also exciting to see so many families still participating in summer reading programs and catching up with people who can’t get into the library as much during the school year.
I am told by acquaintances and others on a regular basis that I probably won’t have a job in ten years and it used to bother me, but I’ve since learned that these people don’t really understand what public librarians do and the important role libraries play in communities across the country. I may not be doing exactly the same thing in ten years, but public libraries will still be around in a more community center focus providing support, programs, and yes, books for community members of all ages.
Summer reading in my library begins in four and a half weeks and I have so much more to do, but I’m glad that I have a job that I love and I’m excited for our summer programming to start in full force!
