Lucky, Blessed, Call it whatever you want…

After the events of yesterday in Boston, you have to take a moment to pause and thank whoever you believe in that you are alright.  I’d rather not dwell on the atrocities that occurred in Boston, but I also feel the need to acknowledge the event and to thank all the people who have helped in any way in Boston and from afar.

I was so lucky this weekend to catch the tail-end of an amazing event held at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia.  Last year, the hospital was able to provide a prom for the children in the oncology unit and they were again, able to provide a prom this year.  Many of the children from very little to teens are unable to participate in a number of typical school activities including prom due to their extensive medical care.  Luckily, my boyfriend became involved in the prom last year and again donated his time and photography skills to shoot photographs and video for the prom.  Definitely take a look at the video he put together from prom this year, which can be found on his YouTube channel.

Being there and seeing what a lot of these kids have had to go through at such a young age, truly makes me feel blessed for my relatively good health of myself and my family, but also being at St. Christopher’s makes me realize how many great people there are out there – people willing to donate their time, skills, and smiles to give kids a chance to be just that, kids.  Rather than focusing on the horror of what happened yesterday, we should focus on the wonderful people this world has in it, people who help their fellow man (or woman or child) without requiring anything in return.  Have a great day, and I’ll be back tomorrow with something a little more relevant to the library world.
