Open This Little Book
This book is such a fun surprise when you open it. I have seen this title flit across the blogs and book reviews, but I didn’t realize its structure until I opened it up and began to read. Inside you’ll find the first on many “little” books, this one being purple, where you meet a number of characters all reading different colored, smaller books. Finally you reach the center, where the book turns almost inside out and each book closes making them a little bigger and a little bigger.
I think young children will absolutely delight in such a fun and interactive story. The distinctive artwork done by illustrator Suzy Lee, who also wrote and illustrated Wave, does an amazing and simple job of creating characters in a miniature world in pen and ink drawings. Jesse Klausmeier, the debut author, certainly understands the excitement of miniature items and the idea of feeling BIG to small children. I adored this book and re-read it a few times to enjoy the simplicity and complexity all at the same time. I know this might be a slightly confusing and round-about review, but this is definitely a book that you to experience for yourself. I’m thinking about how to use it in story time…
