Read! Build! Play! Lego Duplo Story Time
My library participated in the Read! Build! Play! Project back in October and we received a library toolkit from the Lego company with a box full of Duplos and 10 kits and a big book of Grow Caterpillar Grow. You can see the kit from Amazon, here. This afternoon I hosted two story times with 10 kids each to participate with a focus surrounding caterpillars and butterflies and of course building with Lego Duplos!
We started with a song and then read Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We then sang another song and I read through Grow Caterpillar Grow once so the kids understood the story and what they were expected to do, then I read it a second time and gave the kids the Lego Duplos to build each of the characters in the book. They loved being able to build the characters and show me each time they added another piece. AFterward we collected the kits, and I just put a HUGE pile of Lego Duplos in the middle of the floor and gave the kids about 15 minutes of free building time.
We had a great time and plan on offering another session again soon – it was a big hit! For more information about Read! Build! Play!, check out the website with great resources for parents and librarians as well!
