Heroes of Olympus Party

HC2Tonight we’re hosting a Heroes of Olympus party based on Rick Riordan’s popular series about Greek and Roman mythology.  Two years ago, we hosted a similar party focused on the Percy Jackson series and the kids loved it!  We had trivia, made our own ambrosia (ice cream handmade by each student), and we worked with metal creating our own image frequently found in Greek mythology using dollar store baking sheets, pencils for tracing, and Sharpies for coloring them in.

This year, we are continuing with trivia (the kids LOVE letting us know how much they know), we’re going to create our own Roman shields out of black poster board, brads (as nail heads), and oil pastels to decorate, and we’re also hosting Chariot races using scooters, noodles, and some clever obstacle course work.  Our library is lucky in that a local student who grew up in our library now attends a university and studies the Classics.  The Classics Club has volunteered their time helping us with the planning and implementation of our parties.  They are much more knowledgeable that myself and co-workers are about Ancient Greece and Rome and the kids (students in grades 5 – 9) think that hanging out with college kids is so cool!

It should be a lot of fun and I’m excited to see what our 30+ kids think about tonight’s event!  If you have any questions or want some more details about what we do, leave a comment and I’ll get back to you!
