It’s That Time of Year…

I absolutely love the holidays!  Beginning the Wednesday before Thanksgiving all the way to New Year’s Day – I love it!  I love being with my family for Thanksgiving, listening to Christmas music, finding that perfect gift for someone, absolutely everything about the holidays!  This weekend I got to spend some time doing a few other things I love during the holidays.

Saturday morning I was able to do some volunteer work for an amazing event called Help-Portrait.  Help-Portrait is an international movement where professional photographers volunteer their time, expertise, and equipment to give back to those in need.  On December 8th across the globe sites were set up where people could go and receive a free portrait of themselves, their families, etc.  All the people involved are volunteers and there is something very powerful in offering a gift like this to someone.  Although, I am not a professional photographer, my boyfriend is and we had a great time on Saturday giving back to the Philadelphia community around Temple University.  One quick story from the day – a little boy who came in with his mom got his portrait taken and then also got to take some photos of his own – holding a brand-new Nikon D4 (with the help from another volunteer)! The pictures of this little boy are too adorable not to share with you!  Just to get an idea of the scale of this one-day event – there were 56,200 portraits taken in 32 countries.  These numbers will continue to rise as more and more sites report in to the Help-Portrait website.  It’s a great feeling to be part of something so much bigger than myself.

The other thing I got to do was bake Christmas cookies, construct a gingerbread house, and watch Christmas movies with a group of friends this weekend.  It was so much fun to be able to just relax together and do something together.  And the best part is that I have a gingerbread house that is now decorating my dining room for the holidays, I have three different types of cookies to eat for the cost and time of just making one, and some wonderful memories to keep.

I hope you’re having a wonderful holiday season, and I hope you are doing things for yourself and for others!
