Tough Chicks

As I was searching the stacks for those perfect read-aloud books for story time, I came across Tough Chicks written by Cece Meng and illustrated by Melissa Suber and I fell in love!  Tough Chicks is the story of three little chicks by the names of Penny, Polly, adn Molly who are a little different from all the other chicks.  All the other farm animals keep telling Mama Hen to make her chicks be good and bless her heart, Mama Hen says, “They are good!”  Penny, Polly, and Molly are truly tough chicks and their toughness helps them save the tractor on the farm.

This is a great story to read aloud because it has adorable pictures and soem repetition that the kids can help out with.  It also makes a great story for young girls, showing that even though you might be different, you’re still important and still good!  Share this story as part of a tractor or chicken theme or give to parents when asked about empowering stories for girls – even when they are as young as toddlers!  Enjoy!

You can check out Cece Meng’s website where you can find a number of resources available for teachers, librarians, and parents.
