Childhood Favorites

My brother and sister-in-law came out to visit me for a long weekend and as we were catching up with each other’s lives, my brother turns to me and asks if I remember a certain book from our childhood that my mom read aloud to us.

Let me give you a little background about my brother, he has a memory like Fort Knox and is able to remember minute details about a lot of things – specifically when it comes to sports.  But, I wouldn’t say that he’s much of a reader in the traditional sense.  He very rarely will pick up a novel just to read, but he does enjoy reading the sports section of the newspaper and magazines about soccer and the like.  He also really enjoyed books from high school like The Great Gatsby and Catcher in the Rye.  And last year he bought The Best Christmas Pageant Ever – another family favorite.

So getting back to the story – he of course was able to give me a lot of the details, but couldn’t remember the name of the book and when I was able to find it online, he was so excited and plans on ordering it so he can re-read it.  It’s funny what books attach themselves to your memories.  As I have previously posted, my parents read to us since we were born all the way through high school, but a few specific books have each been imprinted into our minds as favorites.  I think I know exactly what to get my brother for Christmas this year….

And if you’re wondering what book he was talking about?  It’s called The Ruby Raven by Michael Dahl.  It’s actually part of a larger series called the Finnigan Zwake Mysteries.  Check it out!
