Are School Librarians Necessary?
YES!!!!! The Colorado State Library has done a number of amazing studies in the field of library science. Recently, I came across an infographic that shows how school librarians have made a difference in the state test scores of Colorado student. Check out the amazing infographic!
I never really considered going to school to become a school library media specialist, but I know a number of librarians who do work in the school district and they work very hard to provide students with not only their resources for school projects, but they also provide books for their reading pleasure. It can’t be easy to do when many schools are removing library assistants, book budgets, and even school librarians from the mix. But, librarians are very resourceful and continue to help students grow.
Unfortunately, many teachers do not see school librarians as resources with great ideas and options to make school projects fun and educational. The more teachers who use school librarians to their advantage, the more likely they will see these people as a necessity in the school. School librarians can also partner with local librarians to provide more resources for research projects in school as well as a place to direct students, teachers, and parents to programs, workshops, and resources.
School librarians are a necessity to all levels of public school and I hope that school district’s can see their positive impact on the students. For more information about the reports provided by the Colorado State Library and the Library Research Service, check out their website!
