Summer Reading is just around the corner…
I don’t believe the general public knows just how much time and effort is put into planning and executing the summer reading program each year. At my library, we begin planning in November, which means by May, I’m very tired of thinking about summer! Our library provides entertainers and shows for the whole family once a week, plus we offer workshops, book discussions, story times, and movie nights on top of that! And although I am thoroughly exhausted at this moment trying to think of all those little things that have to happen before our program starts, I love seeing kids come into the library – so excited to read during the summer!
A little known fact – reading just 6 books during summer vacation, can prevent a reader from regressing during the break from school! Think about that… just 6 books! Check out Scholastic’s article about preventing the summer slide!
Some parents come into the library during summer vacation with that crazed, manic look in their eyes. They have no idea what their child should/wants to be reading! The great thing about summer is that kids get a better chance to read something they are interested in rather than reading for school assignments and bonus – they don’t have a report to write or a diorama to complete. But, this is where parents start to panic… you could not even guess how often I have a parent come into the library and say, “Where is the section for (insert age here) year olds.”
Well, it’s not usually that simple, but here are a couple of places that offer a great selection of books that might help you on the road to finding the perfect book for your child this summer, and if you need some more help – visit your local library and ask a librarian!
