The Philadelphia Zoo and Books
I’m going to brag a little about the Philadelphia Zoo. They offer a number of great programs for children of all ages. Many of the programs include not only a craft and information about different animals at the zoo, but they also include stories! Parents, you don’t necessarily need to sign up to create a program like this, you can do it at home just as well! Find a great children’s book about any animal that is featured at your local zoo and read it together with your kids. You can then find a simple craft project online to do together as a family and visit the zoo and learn about the animal you read about! It’s that simple!
If you need help with some suggestions, visit the local library and ask for a story about your favorite animal! A few books being featured at the Philly Zoo include:
- Over in the Jungle by, Marianne Berkes
- From Head to Toe by, Eric Carle
- The Busy Tree by, Jennifer Ward
- I Wanna Iguana by, Karen Kaufman Orloff

Great idea! My daughter actually recently wrote a book about our local zoo: the Stone Zoo in Stoneham, MA. http://www.anna4animals.net/zoo-book-2012.html
