The Puzzling World of Winston Breen

The Puzzling World of Winston Breen written by Eric Berlin was an exciting, and interactive mystery that reached far above my expectations.  Winston Breen is a twelve-year-old puzzle maniac – he loves all kinds of puzzles!  When his sister finds a puzzle in the birthday gift she receives from Winston, the two become involved in a greater treasure hunt than they could ever imagine.

An ex-cop, the town librarian, a bubbly news reporter, and two competing treasure hunters are along for the ride as Winston and Katie try to find the deceased Walter Fredericks treasure that was meant to reunite all of his children.

The best part of this book was the number of puzzles that were offered to the readers.  They were so interesting and exciting – some were necessary to understand for the story’s plot, while others were just fun to figure out.  This is a great book for kids (and definitely boys!) who love mysteries like The Westing Game, Chasing Vermeer, Nancy Drew Hardy Boys, The Boxcar Children, and Encyclopedia Brown.
