Breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs written by Anne Ursu and illustrated by Erin Mcguire is a modern-day fairy tale based on Hans Christian Anderson’s The Snow Queen.  This retelling is about two best friends Hazel and Jack who do everything together even when it’s deemed uncool by the other kids at school.  They have wonderful imaginations, drawing from many of children’s literature’s famous stories.  That is, until one day when Jack stops talking to Hazel and then disappears to attend to his ailing “Aunt Bernice.”  Hazel knows better and travels on a spectacular journey through a magical forest in search for her best friend.

I truly enjoyed reading this beautifully written and illustrated story about believing in magic – maybe because it’s getting close to Christmas, the most magical time of the year with a story based around the magic of snow.  There are some beautifully written passages that describe exactly how I feel about a new snowfall, even now as an adult.
